A proton is a sub-atomic particle. Its charge is positive, and all elements have it, except neutronium. This is a element with unproved existence and only might exist in extreme conditions. Protons are the defining of atomic number, and the number of protons usually determines the continuation of neutrons and it's properties and place on the table. Neutrons would decay into a proton and electron in certain isotopes, effectively increasing the atomic number by one. This is what would happen to the hypothetical neutronium (turning it into hydrogen), meaning protons define part of an atom.
